The History Of Muscle Cars
The word ''muscle car '' means many things to many people. Some would argue that,strictly-speaking,the orthodox defination of a muscle car is a mass-produced,mid-size,two-door,American car powered by a large V8 engine. However,as we'll see over the years, from full-sized behemoths to sprightly compacts and pony cars.
For many these cars evoke memories of a glorious bygone era, when horsepower was king, cars had real character, and there really was ''power for the people'' down at their local car dealership. For others the word '' muscle car'' sums up all that went wrong with detroit during its heydays in the 1950's,1960's,and 1970's seeing cars with such big engines as profligate and pointless.Indeed, there can be no denying that at the height of the muscle car wars, vehicles were often marketed solely on the basis of their brake horsepower ratings, torque output, and accelaration figures.
But to concentrate on the negative aspects of so-called muscle cars-like the fact that they ''sucked gas''-is to miss the point of these exciting automobiles. These vehicles were automotive works of art, thoroughbred stallions of the motoring world and, even more crucially, they were products of their time, available to everyone and anyone from thei local Ford,GM,or Chrysler dealerships-and all on easy finance terms!
